Q&A with Bob Butler, Global General Manager | SafetyCulture

How have working environments changed in the last few years?

It goes without saying that business as usual has looked a little different in recent times. The pandemic presented an additional layer of complexity for manufacturing, a sector that’s already high-risk. Organizations have had to navigate large hits to the bottom line as well as disruptions in labor, supply chains and demand.

Rather than being a one-off event, the pandemic is serving to accelerate existing industry trends. New ways of tracking information, increasing urgency to connect a dispersed workforce and a rapid pivot to digital channels — these were shifts happening well before COVID-19. As we look at what the “new normal” might be post-pandemic, it’s increasingly clear that we are already living it.

In your experience, how are industry leaders navigating this new world of work?

In the last year, those in the manufacturing sector have demonstrated remarkable resilience, ramping up operations as demand returns to normal levels while also safeguarding against risk. These successful business outcomes aren’t the result of a single leadership figure, but the product of the collaborative effort of many.

In our line of work, we’ve seen time and time again that you don’t need to be in a managerial position to be a leader. Success is a team sport and every single person, no matter what their job title is, has the power to drive towards better business outcomes. After all, it’s those on the ground that have the best operational intel — let their observations become your opportunities.

Business leaders of today realize that making the shift from a singular approach to a collaborative mindset can have outsized impacts, especially in the current climate.

What are some key factors to consider when it comes to setting teams up for success?

While we frequently dissect what makes a great leader, we neglect to think about it from a team’s perspective.

More and more organizations are finding that greater opportunities to encourage productivity no longer lie in extrinsic rewards. Instead, the answer lies in purpose and teamwork. Fostering an environment of trust and camaraderie, growing in awareness and intel, finding a balance between process and creativity — these things don’t happen overnight, but they are vital to building teams equipped to navigate this new world of work.

Here at SafetyCulture, we recognise that great teams don’t just happen: they’re made. For more tactics to help build impactful teams, we are bringing together industry leaders for a free global summit, Made Extraordinary. Join us as we examine how businesses can achieve extraordinary outcomes through great teamwork.

Designed with teams in mind, the free, two-day event will include guidance on truly human leadership, tactics for teamwork, lessons in continuous development, and more. Plus, it has an inspirational side that anyone can take advantage of in our current environment.

Is it important to look beyond your own industry for insights and inspiration in times like this?

When looking for inspiration, we tend to look to those ‘like us’. Others in our industry sector or professional field; those who have walked this road before us. But we can potentially learn more by looking a little further afield — there is more common ground than you’d initially think.

Made Extraordinary will provide businesses with the opportunity to learn from truly unique perspectives. Between them, our speakers have won gold, achieved world records, and shattered glass ceilings. Attendees will hear from NBA superstar Magic Johnson, world champion athlete Diana Nyad, Lieutenant General Nadja West, and #3 CEO in the world Bob Chapman. T.J. Davies' Retention Knobs

Our retention knobs are manufactured above international standards or to machine builder specifications. Retention knobs are manufactured utilizing AMS-6274/AISI-8620 alloy steel drawn in the United States. Threads are single-pointed on our lathes while manufacturing all other retention knob features to ensure high concentricity. Our process ensures that our threads are balanced (lead in/lead out at 180 degrees.) Each retention knob is carburized (hardened) to 58-62HRC, and case depth is .020-.030. Core hardness 40HRC. Each retention knob is coated utilizing a hot black oxide coating to military specifications. Our retention knobs are 100% covered in black oxide to prevent rust. All retention knob surfaces (not just mating surfaces) have a precision finish of 32 RMA micro or better: ISO grade 6N. Each retention knob is magnetic particle tested and tested at 2.5 times the pulling force of the drawbar. Certifications are maintained for each step in the manufacturing process for traceability.
