Transforming Logistics and Warehousing

Q&A with Georg Beyschlag, President | TeamViewer Americas

Tell us about yourself and your role with TeamViewer.

I currently serve as President, TeamViewer Americas, where I focus on developing and strengthening growth across North, Central and South America. Prior to this role, I oversaw TeamViewer’s global human resources and customer support functions, and previously served as Vice President of Finance & Controlling. I also played a major role in TeamViewer’s landmark IPO in 2019 and have since been responsible for some of the company’s most important projects, including major acquisitions and overall strategy development.

What are some of the most significant challenges in the logistics and warehousing industry today?

One of the biggest challenges the industry faces today is the global labor shortage which is significantly driving up the cost of the production and delivery of goods. In addition, inflation and economic uncertainty are top concerns for logistics professionals. Economic uncertainty has led companies to strengthen their supply chains to prepare for changes in demand due to changing economic conditions. Rising fuel prices have also dramatically impact logistics companies, which are being forced to explore alternatives in scheduling and routing to reduce transportation expenses.

What are some best practices for mitigating these issues?

Faced with rising demand coupled with a persistent labor shortage, companies are investing in new technologies to improve efficiency and reduce the need for repetitive manual labor. Technologies such as Augmented Reality (AR), robotics, the Internet of Things (IoT), and Artificial Intelligence (AI) are helping companies resolve these issues. For example, AR is revolutionizing the logistics industry by merging digital and physical worlds. AR enables logistics operators to gain real-time insights into their operations delivered hands-free through smart glasses, and get remote guidance and supervision where needed, boosting efficiency and accuracy.

IoT devices are also helping with warehouse management and efficiency. With IoT sensors, warehouses can monitor equipment and leverage machine learning to prevent breakdowns. AI and automation are being used to build “smart factories” that optimize inventory, assist with asset tracking and management and aid human workers in bolstering safety and efficiency around the warehouse.

Tell us about TeamViewer and how you are transforming logistics and warehousing.

TeamViewer is transforming the logistics and warehousing industry with augmented reality solutions. We work with leading companies, including Coca-Cola and DHL to optimize their logistics with our Frontline xPick solution. xPick, which is powered by AR, overlays digital information onto the real world through mobile devices or, even more efficiently, through smart glasses. Our customers’ logistics processes benefit tremendously from our solution, as it provides real-time information and instructions to warehouse workers and seamlessly integrates confirmation steps to improve efficiency across tasks.

TeamViewer recently secured some technologies from pick-by-vision provider Picavi. Can you discuss how Picavi will be additive to TeamViewer’s current picking solutions?

In May of this year, we secured some technologies from pick-by-vision provider Picavi, which was best known for its data glasses-supported software solution. The acquired parts include, among other things, the product code, parts of the hardware such as wearables and accessories, as well as some marketing assets like its social media channels. This strengthens our footprint in the vision picking sector and further expands our successful offering and presence in the logistics industry.

What are some trends in logistics and warehousing that you expect to see over the next year or so?

The logistics industry, like many others, is focusing more and more on meeting sustainability goals. This is why we can expect companies to prioritize eco-friendly solutions to address their carbon footprint. This includes adopting electric and hybrid vehicles, optimizing route planning to reduce emissions, and using eco-friendly packaging materials. We can also expect to see more companies adopting remote access technology to troubleshoot issues in the warehouse, which will limit their carbon footprint by eliminating the need to physically send out a technician to resolve the problem.
