ZVerse: The 3D Printing Giant Looking To Design A New Content Category

Julian Mitchell for Forbes:  Founded in 2013, ZVerse is a startup that offers solutions for every phase of the 3D print lifecycle, from ideation and development, to 3D design and printing. Using their patented LAYR technology, the company also develops 3D content creation and production apps for small and large-scale businesses.

LAYR is a cloud-based, end-to-end 3D printing software that makes creating and printing 3D objects easy and efficient. The technology features 2D-to-3D automation, transforming images of 2D objects into 3D files, in addition to a 3D quote engine and 3D workflow management to streamline each element of post-processing. Professionals use their LAYR solution across a wide range of industries, from healthcare and architecture, to manufacturing and education.

ZVerse maintains the largest global library of officially licensed 3D printable content for the sports industry, currently licensed by more than 36 collegiate organizations, such as The University of Notre Dame and the University of Oregon, to produce full-color printed sports items. To date, the company has raised $5 million in funding, receiving a $3.5 million Series A round in 2015.

I spoke with Co-Founder and CEO John Carrington about the vision behind the company, disrupting a growing market and the future of 3D printing.  Full Q&A:

T.J. Davies' Retention Knobs

Our retention knobs are manufactured above international standards or to machine builder specifications. Retention knobs are manufactured utilizing AMS-6274/AISI-8620 alloy steel drawn in the United States. Threads are single-pointed on our lathes while manufacturing all other retention knob features to ensure high concentricity. Our process ensures that our threads are balanced (lead in/lead out at 180 degrees.) Each retention knob is carburized (hardened) to 58-62HRC, and case depth is .020-.030. Core hardness 40HRC. Each retention knob is coated utilizing a hot black oxide coating to military specifications. Our retention knobs are 100% covered in black oxide to prevent rust. All retention knob surfaces (not just mating surfaces) have a precision finish of 32 RMA micro or better: ISO grade 6N. Each retention knob is magnetic particle tested and tested at 2.5 times the pulling force of the drawbar. Certifications are maintained for each step in the manufacturing process for traceability.
